Inviting Children to the Wedding

Monday, May 23rd, 2011

IT’S a question almost every bride thinks about. Does she want children — at her wedding?

There are pros and cons: They photograph well, but they steal attention. They don’t drink, but don’t always keep the costly food on their plates. Are children cute guests or annoying disasters waiting to happen?

It is one of the biggest questions you’ll ask while planning a wedding: Are you going to invite kids? You could opt to not have children at your wedding. In this case you would not add the children’s names to the inner envelope of the invitation. It would also be a good idea to spread the word to family and close friends that children are not welcome at the wedding to ensure guests who were curious about bringing their children would not have to directly ask you.

However, many event sites have begun offering free or discounted meals for children. This has made their inclusion easier on the budget, especially if inviting one cousin’s child requires you to invite the offspring of your other six cousins. (more…)

By now, you’ve probably heard of every disaster that has ever occurred at a wedding.

Inclement weather, wardrobe malfunctions, messes involving the chocolate fountain and the “Boot Scootin’ Boogie.” People share amusing and outrageous anecdotes, but no one wants to be the bride who forgets to wear waterproof mascara on the most emotional day of her life (especially at an outdoor wedding in the middle of a hurricane).

Stories of wedding disasters are terrifying for those who are still in the middle of planning.

Options abound for the bachelor or bachelorette party planner

Thursday, January 13th, 2011

Right in the middle of preparing for a wedding, friends of the bride and groom have two more big events to consider: the bachelor and bachelorette parties.

While many guys and gals still opt for barhopping and plenty of booze, those aren’t the only options. Pre-wedding soirees in 2011 will vary considerably depending on the personalities involved.

It’s critical for the best man, maid of honor and anyone else planning the festivities to take the bridal couple’s wishes into account. They may want a wild night, good “clean” fun, or just a low-key evening with their best pals. So what are contemporary brides and grooms doing?

Luxury close at hand

“A lot of brides are doing spa days, and that’s a great way to include the younger set,” says Emilie Duncan, a professional wedding planner based in Columbus, Ohio.

Kids and teens can participate and be pampered, too — great for that flower girl who can’t be left out or younger siblings.

Destination: party

Destination parties are popular with both men and women — who wouldn’t love to get out of town and party with their best pals? You don’t have to hit Vegas or Atlantic City if that isn’t your style.

“One groom was a huge angler, and his groomsmen took him fishing in Montana,” says Duncan. “It was different, and they had a blast.”

One note: Destination parties come with a hefty price tag, and in a perfect world the attendants would split the cost. But in reality, Duncan says, the bride or groom often chips in.

“I don’t think there’s anything wrong with them at least offering,” she says, pointing out that sometimes it’s hard for the party planner to insist that the attendants split a very large bill.

Blast away the stress

Driven to the edge by wedding planning? You’re not alone.

“Outings to shooting ranges are surprisingly popular with both women and men,” says James Bennett, co-founder of Firefly Events, a California company specializing in creative bachelor and bachelorette parties. “It’s a way to work out that aggression.”

The tasteful bride

For foodies or aspiring gourmets, another popular trend is taking a cooking or candy-making lesson with a group of friends.

Fast times

High-performance go-karts, ropes courses and deep-sea fishing are among the most popular of Firefly’s options for grooms, Bennett says.

“A lot of guys like to do something fun and physical during the day, and then maybe go out that night.”

Staying in

What about the other end of the spectrum? “There’s nothing wrong with a backyard barbecue for guys or a dinner party for ladies,” Duncan says. In fact, she says, some couples prefer that, “especially if they’re a little older or it’s a second marriage.”

Getting it together

Occasionally, a couple will choose a “Jack and Jill” party, where both genders mingle. These are still relatively unusual, but that doesn’t stop some couples from wanting to celebrate together.

“One couple went out together with their friends for a night of bowling,” says Duncan. “It was inexpensive, and a lot of fun—they did guys vs. girls.”

One such woman, Tammy Davis, strolled the Civic Center’s Grand Hall with friend and bridesmaid Roxanna Miller. The two were looking for fashion ideas for Davis’ big day, set for July.

Davis, 48, has been in a committed relationship with her longtime boyfriend David “Big Chili” Brown, a Charleston police officer, for well over a decade and, on Christmas Day, he proposed.

“I’ve been planning this for a long, long time,” she said with a bright smile. “We’ve been considering (getting married) for a while but Christmas Day he told me he wanted me to be his wife.

“All I’ve ever wanted was to be his wife.”

She has known Brown since she was a girl, and the two were friends before things took a romantic turn. Davis, a mother of two and grandmother to boot, said Brown will be retiring from the police department the same day as their wedding. (more…)
